REACHING the number one spot for Christmas is a prize many singers dream about.

Now Cheltenham's Jeri Lane is hoping his new festive single will soar to the top of the pop charts.

His Euro-hit, Wrap Myself in Paper, has already reached number two on the Continent.

And his now hoping dance track will get people tapping their feet around the Christmas tree.

Jeri, who grew up in Montpellier, left for London when he was 15, attending the acclaimed Italia Conti drama school.

He moved to the Costa Blanca in Spain but is now back in his home town, where he can be closer to his family, who live in Bishop's Cleeve.

Jeri said: "I moved to Spain in 2000 in search of a warmer climate, but I moved back to Cheltenham in March.

"At the moment I live between Cheltenham, Worcester and London."

Wrap Myself in Paper is the first single to be released from his album, Acceptance, which comes out in January.

Jeri said the dance album was dedicated to his gay fans and those who did not feel accepted for who they were.

And he admitted he was particularly proud of the album after penning every track himself.

He added: "I wanted it to be released in the new year so that it would be out for the clubs in Europe when the season begins."

Wrap Myself in Paper has already enjoyed success overseas.

He said: "It reached number two in Europe which I was obviously very pleased with."

Jeri is still involved in theatre in Gloucestershire, having just been appointed vice-chairman of the Gloucester Operatic and Dramatic Society.

Who cares? Gay straight or neutered he's got no chance. It is currently a close call between Mr Misery from the X Factor and the Hillsborough charity ditty.

cdotd, I think you need to look up the meaning of 'discrimination'. Discrimination is (according to the OED) 'the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex'. Therein lies the fault with your argument. I did not take the **** out of his looks because he is gay. I took the **** out of his looks because he looks weird. I am an equal opportunities **** taker - I don't care if you are gay, straight, black, white, whatever. If I want to take the **** I will. Are we clear now?

My comments are more aimed at the fact that he looks like a boiled egg that has been varnished and then had a face painted on it.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear. We have got ourselves into a tizzy, haven't we? So wrapped up in pc and arguing over who's more pc than whom. Take a step back and ask: Can he sing? Can he write music? Does anything else matter, really? I've never heard of him, but if he does dance music he can't be all bad. Not so sure about a Christmas number one, though. If it's not the X-factor winner or a Christmas number one from 40 years ago (anyone else realise that Slade's "Merry Christmas Everybody" had its 40th anniversary this year?) it's very unikely the BBC will give it any airplay.

cdotd "I think YOU better realise that your antiquated views are no longer accepted by the majority of society" Are you sure about that? In todays politically correct society people are more guarded about what they say and to whom they say it. What they really think is something else and I think YOU might be surprised at what the majority view really is. "I'm not angry at you assuming he's gay" Yes you are. Re read your original post and you will find that 50% of it is you being angry about the assumption. "you equated his effeminate looks with homosexuality, this is a generalisation that is not simply true....." Well I think it is true. Of 100 men made up and looking as he does in the picture how many do you think would be straight? Not many! As Dr_Hfrrrrr said, get off your high horse.

@Dr_Hfrrr So it IS ok to make jokes about him being gay then? In your first comment you equated the way he looks with his sexual orientation, that is (high horse or not) discrimination. I think YOU better realise that your antiquated views are no longer accepted by the majority of society, perhaps in your narrow minded circles they are, but I don't like to see it. So if I had "done my research" that makes your joke acceptable does it? Because he ACTUALLY is gay, it's fine to laugh at him? I think you're getting confused, I'm not angry at you assuming he's gay, I'm angry that you felt it necessary to make a joke about that fact. And if you can't see why it's offensive I'll lay it out for you: you equated his effeminate looks with homosexuality, this is a generalisation that is not simply true and leads to stereotyping of all men who look effeminate. Clear?

cdotd, I'd suggest you Google 'Jeri Lane' where you will find various articles about his drag act, his autobiography, his openess about his sexuality and his various cringe making attempts to 'make it big'. Then you can climb down off your high horse and reflect on the folly of trying to appear politically correct and holier than thou without any research....

Where in the article does it say that he is gay? It's rather presumptuous of you to make statements about his sexuality. Whilst the article infers that he is, no where does it state that, so I think you need to stop making assumptions. By all means make a joke if you feel he is being delusional to reach Christmas number 1, the central premise to this piece of journalism, but not about his looks or sexuality. That's called discrimination.

I think you've spelt the title of his single wrong. Surely the first letter should be a 'C' not a 'W'. He actually makes Rylan look butch.
