ECHO COMMENT: Bishop's Cleeve doesn't need another takeaway

FANCY a takeaway tonight? That can often be the question after a long, hard day.

But what to have. Fish and chips, a Chinese, an Indian, a pizza, a burger, or possibly a kebab?

For many, it's only then that they decide where to go to pick up their meal. It may mean a short walk or possibly a drive.

For people in Bishop's Cleeve, that's not an issue. All the food on our list is available within 40 metres.

The Taj Mahal Indian restaurant offers a takeaway service, the Shiraz Tandoori takeaway is one side, and the Cleeve Fish Bar and Sing's Kitchen Chinese takeaway to the other.

All have a regular clientele, with, on Friday nights in particular, long queues building up outside Cleeve Fish Bar.

So it's difficult to think what other takeaway could possibly add to the mix in the village. And certainly not if it was to open right opposite the four current businesses.

But that is exactly what is proposed for Church Road. And it's no surprise that local residents and the parish council want the plan to be thrown out straight away.

They fear more mess from discarded litter and mounting traffic problems.

What the village clearly needs is something different in the former florist's shop.

The problem is that nobody, least of all an independent trader, has come forward with an alternative plan.

So it's to be hoped that is where the parish and borough council concentrates their efforts – in marketing the village's empty shops positively.

Bishop's Cleeve is a growing community and, with the right incentives, it should be possible to attract new businesses without them all having to involve a hot meal.

IT'S no surprise that traders in Bath Road are getting frustrated.

Is Severn Trent really putting all its efforts into getting one of Cheltenham's busiest roads open again after a sewer collapsed?

The company says it is, with workers on duty around the clock.

Local evidence is very different, with businesses at the scene saying many hours pass with no work being done.

Severn Trent now hopes that the work will be finished by Saturday. Everything must be done to ensure that estimate does not slip.

What is wrong with another takeaway? Or another chippy? Are the parish council trying to quell competition? People who own a business (hopefully) are not going to invest their money into a business on a whim, they would have done some research beforehand. If people don't want the business there, don't give them your custom. If they gain custom, another takeaway was required. Natural progression is the answer!

There is clearly capacity for another takeaway, otherwise there wouldn't be queues outside on Friday nights. Bishop's Cleeve is the size of a town, so another takeaway won't hurt it.

After all the negative comments about Gloucester being aired regards takeaways pound shops etc, it should'nt take long for commen sense to put this application out to grass.. but will the planners take note... How about a poundland shop while they're at it... They've made a dump od Gloucester now lets start on the Villages....and Cheltenham also on the downward spiral...
