Mural work leads to society award

COVERING up an eyesore site with a mural has led to a community award for a Tewkesbury-based housing provider.

Severn Vale Housing Society has won the best community-based activity in the annual Gloucestershire Voluntary and Community Sector Assembly awards.

It follows the painting of a colourful mural on a hoarding around the former Northway Youth and Community Centre site. Forty-eight children and adults created the art work over four days last year to brighten up the area.

Louise Forey, the society's community development officer, said: "This project has been fantastic for showing how local people who take real pride in their community are keen to protect the work they do.

"Since the project, the mural has stayed graffiti-free and local groups are asking if it can be relocated to another part of Northway once the hoarding is taken down."

The former youth centre, in Northway Lane, Northway, was demolished earlier this year. Severn Vale hopes to build houses on the site.
