RUDY the dog has Cheltenham firefighters to thank after being freed from a tricky situation.
The shichon, bought three years ago as a Valentine's Day present, got one of his hind leg paws stuck under a door and suffered a nasty cut as he frantically struggled to free himself.
Owner Josette Farrugia was unable to free her three-year-old dog.
And as he became increasingly anxious, she called the help of firefighters to her home in Viburnum Close, Cheltenham.
After they speedily managed to free the pooch, Josette was full of praise for them.
She said: "They were here in a very short time. Three of them came to help out.
"They put a screwdriver underneath the door and pushed it up.
"I'm very grateful to them as I didn't know what to do. His paw was completely stuck. Every time he tried to move, it made it more painful for him."
Rudy was named after Rudolph Valentino, the late actor who was known as the 'Latin Lover'.
Josette chose the name after her husband, David, bought him for her as a Valentine's Day present almost three years ago.
Since then, she said, the couple and their two grown-up daughters have doted on the loveable canine.
She said she had been embarrassed that the emergency services had been needed but stressed that she had not rung 999.
Instead, she rang the normal phone number for Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service to ask whether it might be able to help. It was then the service's decision, she said, to send the firefighters out.
Rudy was taken to the vets after he was freed and an X-ray showed the paw was cut but not broken.
He is now recovering well with the help of antibiotic tablets.
