AN Indian restaurant in Cheltenham has been named in the top three curry houses in the country.
Prithvi restaurant, in Bath Road, has been named third best Indian restaurant in Britain, according to review website Tripadvisor.
With National Curry Week next week, the rankings were based on the highest average ratings taken from reviews posted on Tripadvisor.
With no other restaurant in the top 10 from Gloucestershire, owner Jay Rahman said he was happy with the award.
He said: “I can’t describe in words what this means for the restaurant.
“I’m just overwhelmed by the response so far, and was speechless when I heard. It is very flattering.
“Cheltenham is a great place to be in general for food. It is a very affluent area and the people here really do understand food.”
Mr Rahman took over Prithvi 21 months ago, after working in various award-winning restaurants around Birmingham, including the Michelin-starred Purnell’s.
Keen to start his own restaurant since he was a boy, the former Bournside School pupil transformed Prithvi into a fine-dining venue for food lovers.
Mr Rahman said: “I built the restaurant up from scratch, and it’s very hard work.
“But it is not just me. It has grown with the team, and everyone who works here are passionate about food and good service.
“It’s about taking one step at a time, and to keep improving. We are not going to rest on our laurels, and we want to keep doing better every day.
“Every single one of them has worked very hard, and they all enjoy it here.
“Everyone is very motivated, and that is the kind of staff I want working here.”
He will now be working with business partner Michael Raphel on another new South Indian restaurant, Bhoomi.
