A WOMAN was killed when her car hit a tree on a Cotswold road labelled dangerous.

The driver, believed to be in her 30s and from Blockley, near Moreton-in-Marsh, was travelling on the A436 between Andoversford and Bourton-on-the-Water, at 11.45pm on Saturday.

She was driving a blue Suzuki Vitara when the incident occurred on a bend approximately two miles south of Bourton, near Windrush Farm.

No other vehicles were involved.

Police and other emergency services attended, but the woman died at the scene as a result of her injuries.

The tragic accident, which closed the road for six hours, happened only two days after action group No Crash (North Cotswolds Rural Area Against Speeding Harm) was launched.

The campaign group, made up of residents living on the A436 between the Air Balloon roundabout and Bourton, and councillors, aims to stop motorists clocking up excessive speeds.

Chairman Paul Hodgkinson said: "This accident is a dreadful way to show that terrible accidents can happen along that road.

"Our just-launched campaign is about promoting road safety along what we all believe to be a dangerous road.

"This accident has just bought the road to people's attention.

"We don't know what the cause is, but we're saying we're looking for more concentration on monitoring the speed and for potentially physical safety measures."

Well-known artist Elizabeth Chalmers, who lives at Upper Harford, near to the site, on the A436, said: "It's very sad to have this happen on our doorstep. It's a long straight road and people do go very fast. Traffic has also increased on it in the 19 years we've lived here."

Calls for road safety action on the A436 were first made following a fatal crash in May 2011.

A 29-year-old man, from Dorset, was killed when his Audi A3 hit a tree at Seven Springs.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision to call 101, quoting incident 602 July 21, 2012.

Paul Hodgkinson stating the obvious about any road where there has been an accident said : "This accident is a dreadful way to show that terrible accidents can happen along that road." "We don't know what the cause is, but we're saying we're looking for more concentration on monitoring the speed and for potentially physical safety measures." Best try to find out what the cause is. Why that bend and not another bend? Look carefully at what worked and what didnt work at Salterley. Condolences to family of lady involved
